9U Team

Hello 9U Parents,

Thank you for participating in the 2017-18 Nevada Wolverines/Reno Ballers travel AAU basketball program. My name is Garry Hill-Thomas and I will be coaching and coordinating the 3rd grade team, alongside of Jason Westphal and John Franklin. Jason, John and I are very excited to coach this group of kids this year. We have all played at a high basketball level and look forward to sharing our knowledge to the kids. We share an interest in teaching young players how to play correctly.

With the help and support of the Boys and Girls Club, we will combine my Nevada Wolverines Basketball Program with the Reno Ballers basketball program. This partnership will directly benefit the players and families in our program. This program looks forward to the opportunity to teach and mentor your son through basketball.

Nevada Wolverines/Reno Ballers Basketball Program is a basketball program intended to:
• Develop and improve basketball/social skills, competitive drives and knowledge of the game and life,
• Bring together high character players, families, and coaches,
• Provide young athletes and their families an organized and affordable competitive basketball program,
• Share the love of the game through positive role models and mentoring,
• Encourage players to maintain grades in school in order to emphasize the proper balance between scholastic achievement and athletic endeavors,
• Generate a greater awareness of Northern Nevada basketball and student-athlete talent pool by playing the best players and teams,
• Provide mentoring from former and college and professional athletes.

This year is our goal to play 40 quality/competitive games between September 30th – May 28th.

40 games in 8 months with high energy practices mixed in!

It is my intends to get everything I can out of each practice and game. I don’t intend to waste your time with unorganized practices. I understand how important family time is and the time commitment in running our kids around town from school to gym to field to home and still having dinner ready on the table.

This year will be a blast for the kids and parents. I’m most excited for a few reason:

  • I get to coach a group of great kids with great families that I have grown to love
  • I have the privilege of coaching “my friend’s kids” & “coaches kids”
  • For all these kids it is their first experience playing on an AAU travel team
  • This team will bring together many families to create one
  • and most importantly we get the opportunity (as parents) to watch them mature and get better.

I’m a big believer in family. I want to develop a culture of family, fun, hard work and competing. During Memorial Day weekend I would like to come gather for BBQ social to bring the families together. For Christmas, I’d like to have a gift exchange among the players.
